(edited excerpt from my 1995 journal) i hate places where there are so many people... but i used to love going down to 8th street in the village ... especially to this book store on sixth avenue and 8th street right up the block from the eighth street playhouse where i'd seen the midnight special of the who quadrophenia and the kids are alright and jimi hendrix and led zeppelin the song remains the same... anyway i used to go to this bookstore and one day in the summer of '95 i went there, just 'cause i liked going there... i'd gotten lots of really cool books there before and maybe i'd get lucky again... i'm like the luckiest guy on earth that way... things just come to me sometimes... on this day in the summer of '95 I was in there and I kinda zoned out, sort of zoomed in on this book. All of a sudden it was like if everything else in the universe went to black and white and the only thing in color was this book... it was like everything else at that moment became irrelevant and i was pulled into this one thing, this one book on the shelf and I was just fascinated and had to pick it up and see what it was all about... of course i bought it, even though i was kinda short, i had just enough to cover the cost, it was hardcover and i usually wait for those to come out in paperback but this one, well I knew I wouldn't wait for it, and I began reading it on the train back home, didn't stop all the way. Fascinating...
